The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) came alive as it officially launched its Eye Care Unit ,a groundbreaking step towards improving access to quality eye health services for the surrounding community. The event, held at the KISE, marked a milestone collaboration between KISE and the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation (OSELF). The partnership seeks to bridge the gap in eye health by providing screening, treatment, and optical services ,ensuring that no learner is left behind due to visual challenges.

Speaking during the launch, Dr. Monica Bitok, Ophthalmologist and Public Health Specialist from the Ministry of Health, applauded KISE and OSELF for their commitment to promoting inclusive health and education. “This initiative shows what true inclusion looks like , when institutions take deliberate steps to make health and education accessible to all,” she said.

The launch attracted warm appreciation from members of the public, with many expressing gratitude that such essential services were being brought closer to them. For some, it was their first comprehensive eye screening; for others, it was an opportunity to learn more about eye health and preventive care.

KISE Director Dr. Norman Kiogora, who signed the MoU on behalf of the institution, reaffirmed KISE’s dedication to creating spaces where learners with special needs can thrive both academically and physically. “At KISE, we believe that inclusion goes beyond the classroom ,it begins with health, well-being, and vision. This unit is a reflection of that belief,” he noted.

Adding to the day’s significance, KISE staff and partners rolled up their sleeves to plant trees around the institution in celebration of Mazingira Day. The tree-planting exercise symbolized growth, sustainability, and the institute’s commitment to nurturing both people and the planet.

The dual celebration of sight and sustainability highlighted KISE’s holistic approach to empowerment ,one that values education, health, and environmental responsibility in equal measure. As the seedlings took root, so too did a renewed sense of hope for a future where every learner can see clearly, learn confidently, and grow in a greener, healthier world.
