NAIROBI, Kenya – May 5, 2025 — Students are streaming in to the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) as registration continues for its Full-Time Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) course, which is quickly becoming the region’s top destination for inclusive communication and special needs training
On Monday, close to 100 students had already been registered through a combination of online applications, walk-ins, and prior submissions. This enthusiastic response highlights the increasing demand for professional sign language training, essential for effective communication in education, healthcare, public service, and beyond.

We are committed to making Kenya a more inclusive society — and language is key to that transformation. This program is not just about learning signs; it’s about fostering understanding and breaking down communication barriers between the hearing and Deaf communities.
Dr. Norman Kiogora,
The KISE Director
Registration for the Full-Time KSL course continues throughout this week, providing prospective learners the opportunity to gain practical skills in communicating with persons who are Deaf or hard of hearing. The course aligns with Kenya’s national disability inclusion goals, as well as international commitments to disability rights.

KISE has also announced that the next intake for the full-time KSL course will be in September 2025, with applications opening in July.
As a recognized center of excellence in special needs education, KISE remains dedicated to promoting inclusion through top-tier training, research, and advocacy.
This effort reflects a broader strategy by the Ministry of Education to strengthen Special Needs Education under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and align with the Education Sector Policy for Learners and Trainees with Disabilities (2018).
